Was Malcolm McDowell Intended to be a Sex Symbol?

If anyone hasn’t noticed; except for a few (you know who you are,) this man has bared the full monty on film before. If he wasn’t nude, he was shirtless (and he appeared shirtless in a lot of films in the past.)

If he’s fully clothed then there is some “visual area” where he’s lacking cover from an article of clothing. For instance, in the film Figures in a Landscape, he was wearing this shirt where a good portion of his chest was completely exposed and he wore this shirt a good 40 minutes of the movie!

Exhibit A.

Figures in a Landscape is a good movie but not exactly the type of movie to get the attention of a female audience. However if you throw in a tremendously talented and incredibly attractive young man into a slow paced masculine film to play a sensitive character exposing a little bit of skin, you might get a woman’s attention.

So to answer the question, if Malcolm was intended to be a sex symbol in his early days? Well between all the countless shirtless appearances/nude scenes on film, getting romantic with a female counterpart and playing a few sensitive characters… I’d say yes.
